Case Study

Overview

Reserve is an innovative concept for a table booking app designed to redefine the dining experience for both users and restaurants. By addressing common pain points in the reservation process.

The Idea

The concept for Reserve started with a simple question: Why does booking a table have to be so frustrating? From waiting on hold to not knowing whether a table is available, the process felt outdated. I wanted to create a solution that makes dining out seamless, enjoyable, and stress-free for diners.

Research – Understanding the Problem

I began by digging into the dining experience, focusing on the frustrations diners face. To do this, I:

  • Conducted Surveys: I asked people about their experiences with table reservations. The feedback showed common issues such as difficulty finding available tables, lack of transparency in the booking process, and the time-consuming nature of making reservations by phone.

  • Held Informal Interviews: I spoke with frequent diners who shared their wish for a faster, more reliable way to book tables.

The results were clear: diners wanted an app that could instantly show available tables and confirm bookings without the hassle.

Designing the Solution

  • With a clear understanding of the problem, I started designing the foundation for Reserve:

    • Wireframes: I sketched out a user interface focusing on simplicity. The main features included:

      • A search function allowing users to filter by cuisine, location, and availability.

      • A booking process that takes just a few taps to complete.

      • Notifications for confirmations and reminders.

    • Core Features:

      • Real-time table availability so users know exactly when and where they can dine.

      • Personalized recommendations based on dining preferences.

      • An easy-to-navigate layout that prioritizes speed and convenience.

These wireframes helped me visualize how the app would function and ensured that every step of the user journey was intuitive.

Feedback and Iteration

Once the initial wireframes were complete, I shared them with friends, family, and other potential users to gather feedback. Their input was instrumental in refining the app:

  • Simplifying Filters: Early feedback highlighted that some filters were too complex, so I streamlined them to focus on essential options like cuisine type and proximity.

  • Improving Notifications: Users suggested adding reminders closer to the reservation time, which I incorporated into the design.

  • Enhancing the Look: I updated the visual design to make the app more modern and appealing, ensuring it was both functional and attractive.

This iterative process helped me fine-tune the concept and prioritize features that mattered most to users.

Bringing It All Together

With the design finalized, I mapped out how the app would function as a cohesive system. The goal was to ensure that:

  • Booking is Effortless: Users can search for a restaurant, check availability, and book a table in seconds.

  • The Interface is Intuitive: Every screen guides users clearly, reducing any chance of confusion.

  • Notifications Add Value: Automated reminders keep users informed without being intrusive.

What I've Learnt and Next Steps

This journey has taught me several valuable lessons:

  • Start with the User: Listening to real-world frustrations gave me a clear direction and ensured the app addressed genuine needs.

  • Iterate Constantly: Each round of feedback brought new insights and made Reserve better.

  • Keep It Simple: A clean, straightforward design goes a long way in creating a positive user experience.

While Reserve is still in the concept phase, the groundwork has been laid. The next steps involve:

  1. Developing a prototype to test the core functionality.

  2. Partnering with a small group of restaurants to integrate real-time table availability.

  3. Launching a beta version in a test city to gather real-world feedback and refine the app further.

Looking Ahead

I’m excited to continue developing Reserve and bringing this concept to life. With a focus on user feedback and a commitment to simplifying the dining experience, I believe Reserve has the potential to transform how people plan their meals out.
